Abstract
This study was carried out to estimate the heritabilities of body weights and body measurements and to estimate the genetic and phenotypic correlation coefficients on the baisis of the records obtained from 6,226 heads of Korean Native Cow raised at Hanwoo Purebreeding Region of 8 provinces from 1984 to 1994. The generic parameters were estimated by the Becker`s(1985) methods utilizing the variance components of sire. The heritability estimates of the body weights at birth and 4 months of age were 0.262?.044 and 0.48710.085, respectively. The heritabilies of body weight, withers height, rump height, body length, chest girth, chest depth, chest width, rump length, rump width, thud width and hipbone width at 24 months of age were estimated as 0.189±0.056, 0.259±0.056, 0.182±0.042, 0.090±0.026, 0.132 ±0.033, 0.195±0.045, 0.194±0.044, 0.149±0.037, 0.124±0.032, 0.188±0.043 and 0.228±0.050, respectively. The genetic and phenotypic correlation coefficients between the birth weight and the weaning weight were estimated as 0.227 and 0.125, respectively. `These lower relationships were in contrast with other reports that heavier calf at birth grew faster till weaning than lighter calf at birth. The genetic correlation coefficients of the body weight with the withers height, rump height, body length, chest girth, chest depth, chest width, rump length, rump width, thurl width and hipbone width at 24 months of age were estimated as 0.534, 0.399, 0.173, 0.745, 0.578, 0.695, 0.395, 0.414, 0.450 and 0.114, respectively. `The Genetic correlations of the body weight with the chest girth, chest width, chest depth and withers height were high, while those with the hipbone wide and body length were extremly low. In general, the body weights seemed to have closer relationship with the development of fore quaters than with that of hind quaters of the Korean Native Cattle. The phenotypic correlation coefficients of the body weight with the withers height, rump height, body lengdt, chest girth, chest depth, chest width, rump length, rump width, thud width and hipbone width at 24 months of age were estimated as 0.378, 0.361, 0.465, 0.793, 0.587, 0.575, 0.425, 0.516, 0.407 and 0.354, respectively.
