Abstract

Chiral separation of threeβ-blocking agents, propranolol, atenolol and metoprolol by RP-HPLC with a new chiral column Shiseido CD-Ph was attempted. The effects of acetonitrile content,pH,column temperature, and buffer concentration on the chiral separation of the threeβ-blocking agents were investigatˉed,and optimal conditions were obtained.Under the optimized conditions, enantiomers of propranolol, metoˉprolol, and atenolol were well separated from the baseline. The possible mechanism of chiral separation was discussed based on the structural characteristics of the agents. The separation method developed was reliable, simple, rapid and sensitive, and may be used for routine analysis of enantiomers ofβ-blocking agents.
