Abstract

The incidence of melancholia in traditional Chinese medicine, similar to depressive disorder in western medicine,is in a rising trend recently. We think the pathogenesis of melancholia is as follows: Not liver freely distributing, loss of transportation and digestion of spleen, loss nourishment of the mind, disorders of the Yin Yang Qi and Xue in Zang and Fu Organs. So accordingly, the syndrome differentiation and treatment can be classified as follows: Liver Qi stagnation, pathogenic fire derived from stagnation of Liver-QI,depressive stagnation of phlegm and Qi,deficiency of both heart and spleen, deficiency of heart Yin,Yin deficiency of liver and kidney.Professor WEI Mu-Xin says the first step in the treatment is to relieve the depressed liver, and than consider the other factors. We should apply the concept of wholism and the principle of combining syndrome differentiation and disease differentiation into practice.Meanwhile,we should take advantage of the strengths of the western medicine, making use of the modern examination tools.Psychotherapy, acupuncture and diet therapy are also the ways we can resort to.So the integral therapies of chinese and western medicine have definite curative effect, which not only avoids the side effects of the western medicine, but also shortens the therapy course that encourages patients confidently to fight with the disease.
