Abstract
We register wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) lines MNR434 (Reg. no. GP‐1041, PI 689522) and MNR527 (Reg. no. GP‐1040, PI 689521) as new sources of rust resistance germplasm. These two wheat lines were developed via ethyl methane sulfonate (EMS) mutagenesis of ‘Alpowa’ and identified after stem rust screening using a Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici isolate virulent to the wild‐type followed by one backcross to Alpowa and six generations of self‐pollination. MNR434 has shown new resistance to stem, stripe, and leaf rusts, and MNR527 has new resistance to stem and stripe rusts, but not leaf rust. The mutations that conferred rust resistance did not significantly reduce grain yield compared with the wild‐type allele in a near isogenic background under greenhouse and field conditions.
