Abstract

TRANSIT 0.2 (Film, 2018, Duration 2:45) is the fifth part of “The Scientist Series”, an exploration of death, acceptance, and renewal, originally born from a 9 part poetic cycle. TRANSIT 0.2 Is a film which uses fixed studio camera, drone and static shooting techniques in locations ranging from local playing fields to the streets and markets of Hackney. The film draws upon multiple imagery and directional multi-layered sonic composition to explore an escape from the maze of grief. It records the psychological progress of the grieving Scientist, as she struggles to release herself from the pain of loss and to return to a life she recognises, even if she is not quite a part, not quite reintegrated, into this “normality”. The film starts with the startled breathing of one who is trapped and deeply panicked – one who cannot yet see their way out of the underworld. The soundscape echoes with a departing ferry horn and the ticking of an impatient clock. While her panic increases, her journey begins in another part of the screen—she is aware of the possibility of escape, but first she must be calm enough to stop and see the way. After a rapid burst of cyclical pain (‘53 seconds) the scientist finally gathers herself and we hear the sound of a lift bringing her to the surface. Now she can stride forth, and as she travels across the fields, (Elysium?), birdsong gives way to the alluring sounds of the city, a plaintive siren, cars traversing an overpass, voices, deep doors closing. She rests on the steps of a church before confronting the confusion of the longed for world, and bringing the multiple versions of her fractured psyche to a full stop amongst the throngs of those she does and doesn’t recognise.
