Abstract
Wood anatomy of 27 species from Sapindales growing in Barinas state (Venezuela) are described. Species studied belong to the following families: Anacardiaceae, Burseraceae, Hippocastanaceae, Meliaceae, Rutaceae, Sapindaceae, Simaroubaceae and Staphyleaceae. A notable homogeneity was found, especially between Anacardiaceae- Burseraceae and Meliaceae-Sapindaceae. The most important features are the presence of mineral inclusions (crystals and/or silica) and septate fibers. Marginal parenchyma is found in some species of Hippocastanaceae, Meliaceae, Rutaceae, Simaroubaceae and, ocasionally, Sapindaceae. The only species studied from Staphyleaceae shows a big difference with the other families studied and the only species studied of the Hippocastanaceae family have intermediate features between Meliaceae and Sapindaceae. The segregation of Staphyleaceae from the order Sapindales is supported by wood anatomy traits. A dichotomous key for identification is included.
