Abstract

Igneous rocks are also called as primary rocks and are the chief constituent of the earth crust. Igneous petrology is a core branch of the earth science which deals with the origin, occurrence, classification, composition and distribution of igneous rocks in the earth crust. The study of igneous rocks is very much essential not only for Geologists but also for Civil Engineers and Mining Engineers. The aim of this book is to provide fundamental concepts of igneous rocks to the students and will guide them to classify and identify igneous rocks in the field as well as in the Lab under microscope. For this purpose the book is widely supported by field photographs and microphotographs. The various fundamental aspects of igneous rocks such as Forms, Classifications and Textures are described in this book. The megascopic and microscopic description of some commonly occurring igneous rocks are also provided in the book.
