The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of two progressive weight training programs (Isometric-Isotonic and Isotonic-Isometric) upon selected measures of upper body strength. A secondary purpose was to determine the effect of the two weight training programs upon muscular endurance and resting heart rate. The following procedure was employed: twenty-nine male freshmen students at South Dakota State University volunteered as subjects and were placed in three groups equated by a muscular strength test. The subjects in the two experimental weight training groups (Isometric-Isotonic and Isotonic-Isometric) participated in a six week training program. The exercise program was predetermined by the writer (bench press, military press, low pull, and bent rowing). To obtain data for this experiment an initial and a final rest for resting heart rate and muscular endurance were administered initially and finally and also once each week during the training program. The experimental groups met Monday through Thursday with a testing period on Friday. The training program began on February 3, 1967, and terminated on March 16, 1957.
