Abstract
Objective: Several adipose tissue bioactive factors (adipokines) have been linked to cardiovascular diseases either with cardioprotective effects such as omentin-1 and apelin or predisposing to cardiotoxicity such as visfatin and chemerin. However, the exact role of adipokines in the presence of atrial fibrillation (AF) remains unclear.Design and method: Overall, 100 patients (50 with AF and 50 without AF) matched for age, gender and body mass index were studied. Omentin-1, apelin, visfatin and chemerin plasma levels were measured by the Elisa method. Results: Omentin-1 and apelin plasma levels were lower whereas visfatin and chemerin levels were higher in patients with AF compared to controls. Nevertheless, these differences were statistically significant only for apelin and visfatin. Conclusions: Reduced apelin and increased visfatin levels were observed in patients with AF indicating a potential role as independent prognostic factors for this condition.
