Abstract
The fundamental properties of pongamia biodiesel are almost similar to diesel fuel, subsequently, pongamia biodiesel and diesel fuel were operated in the diesel engine as test fuels, and its emission and performance parameters of the engine were evaluated. The experimental results reveal that that biodiesel showed the better emission characteristics to that of diesel fuel. The output power of pongamia biodiesel was comparable with diesel fuel. The brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) was higher for pongamia biodiesel because of its lower heat content. The exhaust emissions of HC, CO, NOx, and smoke are diminished by 26%, 25%, 6%, and 46% respectively. Experimental results were established that the neat pongamia biodiesel reduce harmful emissions significantly from an unmodified diesel engine.
