AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE IN ROBERT FROST’S TWO POEMS “A MINOR BIRD & FIRE AND ICE”

Literature is the ideas, the concepts and imagination that are expressed through language. In addition, English and literature cannot be separated because language is basic material produced by literature which cover novels, poems, drama, etc. Figurative language cannot be understood literally, because it needs analysis. Therefore, the researcher would like to analyse the use of figurative language in the poem. The aims of this study were to find out the kinds and the meanings of figurative languages used in two poems by Robert Frosts that are “A Minor Bird and Fire and Ice”. The researcher used qualitative research. Then used objective approach, to identify the figurative language in Robert Frost’s Poem. This research used documents analysis through reviewing of documents such as books, articles, journals and internet. to collect the data. The research result of data analysis showed that Robert Frost’s poem used hyperbole, litotes, personification, and metaphor. In the poem “A Minor Bird”, he used personification and litotes. While in the poem “Fire and Ice”, he used metaphor, hyperbole and litotes. The use of figurative language in Robert Frost’s poem was to beautify the line in order to obtain the message or imaginative fantasy to create a particular effect for the reader or audience.
