Abstract
Protein biomarker discovery is a multifaceted process that integrates many components of fundamental, translational, and clinical research. In this chapter, we introduce individual phases of the protein biomarker discovery pipeline, such as biomarker candidate identification, verification, and validation. We also discuss integration of different -omics technologies used to provide biomarker candidates and focus on mass spectrometry as a principal technique for qualitative and quantitative analysis of proteins. Proteomic samples, protein-based assays, and common limitations of protein biomarker discovery are reviewed.
