Clinical characteristics of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery and analysis of treatment

OBJECTIVE To explore the clinical and etiological characteristics of postoperative endophthalmitis in the patients undergoing cataract surgery and analyze the clinical outcomes so as to provide guidance for clinical diagnosis and treatment.METHODS The clinical data of 34 patients with endophthalmitis who underwent the cataract surgery from Jan 2005 to Jul 2014 were analyzed,the clinical characteristics were summarized,the detection of pathogens and the targeted treatment were carried out,the clinical outcomes were observed,and the statistical analysis was performed by using SPSS 21.0software.RESULTS The mean onset time of endophthalmitis was(27.39±9.18)days after the cataract surgery;the eye irritation and the declined visual acuity were the major clinical symptoms.Totally 18 cases were cultured positive for pathogens with the positive rate of 52.94%,and the Staphylococcus epidermidis was the predominant species of the pathogens isolated,accounting for 55.56%(10strains).After the treatment,the mean vision of the patients was 0.28±0.11,the literacy rate was 79.41%,and 41.18%of the patients were with the visual acuity more than 0.3,as compared with that before the treatment,the difference was statistically significant(P<0.01).CONCLUSIONThe postoperative endophthalmitis has significant impact on the recovery of visual acuity of the patients undergoing cataract surgery,and the early intervention can protect the visual function of the patients to the greatest extent.
