Abstract
Vitamin D, also considered a steroid hormone, can be found in different chemical forms, the most important being vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). Both forms can be acquired through diet, but for most people the largest source of vitamin D is obtained by endogenous production. Deficiency of vitamin D, or hypovitaminosis D, is diagnosed through serum calcidiol, although it is not the biologically functional metabolite. The present study used data from a secondary source where the researchers collected vitamin D dosing data from 6439 patients from the Laboratory of Clinical Analyzes-UNISUL from July 1, 2017 to July 31, 2018, of which 1,835 (28.5 %) were male and 4,604 (71.5%) were females. The mean age was 44 years, the minimum age was 0, corresponding to ages below one year and a maximum of 93 years. mean of vitamin D was 29.9 ng/mL. After some studies it was observed that the prevalence of hypovitaminosis D decreased considerably after the change of the reference values, thus a large part of the individuals who needed supplementation, no longer needed. Therefore, it is extremely important that more studies are carried out in order to confirm the reliability of the current reference value in order to avoid problems related to hypovitaminosis D because patients diagnosed with hypovitaminosis D supplementation aiming at normalizing serum levels of Vitamin.
