Healthcare Planning and Emerging Technologies: Improving Healthcare Delivery

Abstract

Widespread health reforms across Africa suggest that there is a strong appetite to strengthen healthcare delivery at primary, secondary and tertiary levels. Obstacles confronting effective delivery of healthcare are further compounded by ineffective planning. This chapter argues that the healthcare planning process can be significantly improved by embracing new and emerging technologies which are already being deployed in allied professions. The chapter starts with a definition of healthcare planning and a discussion of the benefits of planning for healthcare delivery across Africa. This is followed by a brief explanation of how planning deficiencies can contribute towards inequalities. The chapter concludes by identifying eight emerging technologies and a robustly detailing their nexus with healthcare delivery.
