The effect of compaction method on compressive strength of self compacting concrete (SCC) in laboratory

Abstract

Concrete compaction is one of the processes that greatly affects the concrete compressive strength. Non-dense concrete usually has low compressive strength. But in the case of self-compacting concrete it is not known how much the influence of external compaction on compressive strength. This study aims to determine the effect of the compaction method on the compressive strength of self-compacting concrete. There are 3 treatment methods used in this research. The first method is compressive strength specimen made without compaction, while the second method specimen is made by compaction using tamping rod diameter 16 mm and height 62 cm, while the last method specimen is compacted by using an external vibrator. Specimen is a cylinder with a diameter of 15 cm and a height of 30 cm. The number of specimen is 30 pieces for each type of compaction method. It is found that the characteristic compressive strength of SCC is 20.70, 20.55 and 21.39 MPa for non-compaction specimens, with manual compaction and with external vibrator compaction. Based on the result, it can be concluded that it is better to make a specimen compressive strength of SCC still needs to be compacted to obtain maximum compressive strength.
