Abstract

In the case of endodontic treatment failure, an endodontic retreatment is indicated. Causes of failure are different, and may be confirmed by clinical examination and radiological analysis. Nonsurgical endodontic retreatment involves removal of the root canal filling material used in primary endodontic treatment. Root canal filling materials can be removed by hand or rotary instrumentation techniques; and organic solvents can also be used. This thesis presents a clinical case of nonsurgical endodontic retreatment using rotary files in reciprocating movement without the use of solvents. The retreatment was performed due to intraoral sinus tract in the area of the upper right central incisor and the periapical radiolucency on x-ray. In this case report, a rotary technique using reciprocating movement was used for endodontic retreatment which enabled fast and easy removal of the existing root canal filling and perserving the original anatomy of the root canal. One week after the retreatment procedure sinus tract dissapeared, suggesting a successful endodontic retreatment. However, further clinical and radiological follow-up of the patient is needed to confirm that the tooth is still asymptomatic and that the periapical lesion is healing.
