Comparison of Automated Graphical User Interface Testing Tools

Abstract

The thesis presents the analysis of modern tools for automated testing of various web based user interfaces. The purpose of the work is to compare specific test automation solutions and point out the most suitable test automation tool amongst them. One of the main goals of test automation is to gain faster execution when compared to manual testing and overall cost deduction. There are multiple test automation solutions available on the market, which differ in complexity of use, type of operation and environment support. This thesis concentrates on three tools intended for test automation: Selenium, Appium and Eggplant. It describes their main characteristics, evaluates their overall performance and analyses their effectiveness. Every test automation solution is presented through a set of automated test scripts executed in a specific environment under test. Automated test scripts are compared in speed and reliability of execution first. Then, a more detailed analysis follows. The analysis results are significantly different in both speed and reliability for different test automation solutions and in thesis we point out some of the reasons behind them. Finally, suggestions on how to improve the overall comparison process are made.
