Abstract

The marine fisheries sector in India supports 4 million \nfishermen population living in 9 maritime states and 2 union \nterritories for their livelihood by providing employment to \nnearly 9.9 lakh fishermen. As per the 2012 FAO fishery statistics, \nIndia stands 7th with regard to marine capture fish production in \nthe World after China, Indonesia, USA, Peru, Russia and Japan with \n4.3% contribution. Marine living resources caught from the Indian \nseas forms a major source of nutritional requirement of the people \nand provide \nexport earnings \nto the tune of \nRs. 33,440 crores. The marine fish \nproduction has \nincreased from \nabout 50,000 \ntonnes in 1950 to \nthe all time high \nof 3.94 million \ntonnes in 2012 \napproaching the recommended potential of 4.4 million tonnes from \nthe Indian EEZ
