Abstract

TBI is a common combat injury, which can occur through explosive blast, and produces brain changes due to various mechanisms of injury. Although mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is the most common, it is extremely difficult to diagnose and is the least understood. Some mTBIs have progressive, long-term debilitating consequences. A single TBI can produce gray and white matter atrophy, accelerate age-related progressive neurodegeneration, and increase the risk of developing AD, PD, and motor neuron disease later in life. TBI is the common cause of PTSD among people of all ages ( Jaffee and Meyer 2009 ). TBI can also occur in children due to parental neglect, among adolescents due to impaired drunk-driving, vehicle over-speeding, and in soldiers during blast injury in the war theater.
