Abstract
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) is an important and non-trivial consideration for the development and operation of Power Line Communications (PLC) systems. This chapter shows the disturbance models for a PLC device being a victim and a source of interferences. In its role as a victim of interference, a PLC device is subjected to several man-made and natural electromagnetic phenomena. It describes the parameters for characterizing the symmetry of a network, the relation between the forward power and the resulting field strength, and electric and magnetic field theory pertinent for radiation effects through PLC. The chapter explains the ways how to measure electromagnetic emission from PLC installations. It elaborates on the electromagnetic susceptibility of PLC devices. The chapter discusses acceptable emission levels and how to approach PLC EMC regulation from a technical viewpoint.
