Multiple personality disorder of the main character in Daniel Keyes' novel the mind of Billy Milligan

Literature known as a creative and imaginative human’s activity, literature describes the problem or case of public life, the one is psychological problem. The Mind of Billy Milligan is a novel by Daniel Keyes, based on true story that the main character (William Stanley Milligan) encounters psychological problem in his personality called multiple personality disorder. This study focuses on finding two things, first, to know what are the personality that Billy has and second to know the factor that causes Billy has multiple personality disorder. The writer uses Sigmund Freud's theory of psychoanalysis and is assisted by other supporting theories. In analyzing data, the writer uses qualitative methods to analyze descriptively. The data is taken from Daniel Keyes's The Mind of Billy Milligan novel. The results of this study show that a human with multiple personality disorder has various characters in each personality, and can be categorizes who personality that has a tendency in the id, ego or superego. The main factor that causes Billy’s has multiple personality disorder it’s because emotional abuse, verbal abuse, physical abuse and sexual abuse. The suggest of this research to reduce the level of abuse in children because the impact is very serious. Abuse to children can effects: trauma, not confident, criminal acts and of course cause the child has multiple personality disorder.
