Abstract

This chapter gives an overview on the topic of textile technology in ancient Greece and Rome 600 BCE - 600 CE. A short historiographical note as well as an introduction into sources and methods is provided. Furthermore all stages of production are discussed as well as starting border, warp-weighted loom, two-beam loom and the question of loom innovations in Roman times. Special attention is paid to mathematical constraints of weaving patterns and to whether primitiveness of tools indicates a simple technology.
