Abstract

Members of the family Togaviridae are enveloped, plus-strand RNA viruses. Virions are ~70 nm in diameter and have T=4 icosahedral symmetry. Members of the genus Alphavirus are transmitted by mosquitos. New World alphaviruses include Eastern equine encephalitis virus and Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus. Old World alphavirus infections often include joint pain and inflammation among their symptoms. Chikungunya virus is an emerging Old World alphavirus. The genus Rubivirus contains a single virus that causes rubella (German measles). Rubella virus causes very mild disease in children, but can cause severe congenital defects when women are infected early in pregnancy. Rubella virus is transmitted by the respiratory route.
