Abstract
This chapter explains how aesthetics operates through new concepts of distance and access that can be as socially and politically descriptive as empowering. It outlines how the definition of the aesthetic has broadened in contemporary thought, and how the renewed interest in aesthetics in multiple disciplines is generating promising new ideas about the future of social equality and political engagement.
