Abstract
Pressure sores are a common problem among certain patient populations, such as the elderly, immobilized and insensate. The occurrence of a pressure sore results in significantly increased length of hospital admission and healthcare costs. Within this chapter is discussed the epidemiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, assessment and management of pressure sores. Strategies for prevention of pressure sores are reviewed. The role of reconstructive surgery in management of a pressure sore, reconstructive options for different sites, and postoperative care and potential complications are also examined.
