Abstract
A planar rectangular conducting patch is considered to increase its bandwidth compared with the conventional microstrip antenna. The thin substrate is the main reason for narrowing the microstrip antenna bandwidth due to its high Q-factor. Here, the ground plane of the conventional microstrip antenna is reduced along its width direction, but the ground plane length along the patch length is kept. As such, the patch resonance is kept close to the conventional microstrip, but the Q-factor is decreased increasing the new structure bandwidth. Now, strong coupling between the patch and the coaxial cable feeding influences the antenna performance. Both the simulated and the measured results present the validity of this design where the bandwidth is increased to be over 15%. Depending on this analytical method the corresponding bandwidth can be broadened again after continuously narrowing the width of the ground plane.
