The flouting maxims in Spy movie

This research aimed to analyze the delivered types and functions of flouting maxims in Spy movie. The researcher used the theory of Cooperative Principle by Grice, and Speech Acts’ theory by Searle. This research employed qualitative method. The data in this research were taken from Spy movie. The steps of collecting data encompassed: the researcher downloaded Spy movie and movie script from the internet, the researcher watched and paid attention to the movie and the process of watching and observing was done several times. After watching and observing data was done, the researcher separated the utterance which contains of flouting maxim, in this step, the researcher transcribed the gained data for easier analyzing process. The phases of analyzing data comprised: data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The result of this research indicated that the researcher found forty five utterances which contains the flouting maxim. Those were divided into four categories namely flouting maxim of quantity (22), flouting maxim of relation (16), flouting maxim of quality (4), and flouting maxim of manner (3). The characters mostly flouted maxim of quantity since they wanted to express more about something by saying many words to make the clear explanation. There were four functions that used by the characters when doing the conversation, there were: expressive (18), representative (14), directive (10), and commisive (3). Furthermore, the expressive function was often used by the characters because they wanted to show their feeling via utterances.
