Abstract

main purpose of this study is to describe Santiago's personality and self-defense as the main character in The Old Man And Sea novel using psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud. In analyzing this study, a qualitative approach is used by reading the detailed The Old Man And Sea novel to understand the content of the story and to collect the data related to the personality of the main character. Based on the results of the study, the writer revealed some of Santiago's characteristics and personality into three personality levels: Id, Ego, Super-ego and defense mechanism (repression, denial, projection, displacement, rationalization, regression, reaction formation and sublimation). This study might be useful for those who are interested in conducting a study on character based on psychoanalysis. Key word: Character, Psychoanalysis, Id, Ego, Super-ego and Defense Mechanism.
