Abstract

This study focuses on the actual pronunciations of stem-final consonant clusters. In Korean phonology, stem-final consonant clusters must be pronounced with a consonant which is one of the cluster members. The experiment result showed that this constraint was not kept at the pronunciations of ten subjects, in their 20s, half of whom are from Seoul area and the rest from Chungnam province. Seoul and Chungnam groups did not reveal any meaningful difference in their pronunciations. Another finding is that each subject seems to utilize 2 or more mental entities for during their cluster pronunciation since the result showed that each subject pronounced identical clusters with different consonant pronunciations while pronouncing each cluster with three times` repetition.
