Abstract
Contemporary land systems science is described, and its relationships to land‐use and land‐cover change, and land change science explained. The importance of land systems sciences in contemporary local‐ to global‐scale environmental and societal issues is outlined, its interdisciplinary nature considered, and its position within geography explained.
