Abstract

The concept of an architectural design shows similarities with the real object, the building itself. At the end of the design process a virtual object is created, showing the same geometrical and morphological qualities as the real object, both in space and in time. The ideas and solutions the designer invents relate to space. Right from the start, the designer thinks in three dimensions, not two, which is termed as spatial thinking. The additional value of computation in this process lies in the interaction and integration of various knowledge disciplines and the involved actors. The challenge is in which way computational design can contribute to the multidisciplinary issues in architectural design, to be able to achieve better-performing buildings. The application and integration of the pattern grammars as a very specific development in computational design brings new techniques, methods, and tools that can contribute to environmental problems in architectural design.
