Abstract

The UK population is ageing ( Office for National Statistics (ONS), 2015 ). As the population ages, the number of people developing skin conditions is set to increase ( ONS, 2015 ; All Party Parliamentary Group on Skin (APPGS), 2000 ). Ageing skin is more prone to a range of conditions, including infections, infestations, eczema and psoriasis ( Nigam and Knight, 2008 ). One of the symptoms of many skin conditions is itching (pruritus). In order to treat itching, it is important to know what is causing the problem. This article uses a case study approach that aims to enable the healthcare assistant to gain a greater understanding of the causes of pruritus.
