Abstract
This chapter discusses red and yellow soils that are typical of the tropical and subtropical uplands and special attention is given to those of humid and sub humid regions. The most extensive red and yellow soils of the tropics and subtropics are those known among others as latosols, the greatest areas of which are found in South America and in Africa. Following the latosols, the most important red and yellow soils of the tropical and subtropical uplands are the lateritic podzolic soils. It has been found that reconnaissance mapping may supply the preliminary necessary knowledge for the classification of the soils at higher and medium levels to which the phases should be added.
