A model for teaching writing

The ability to express their thoughts clearly in writing is a crucial skill for children to develop in primary school. Without it, it is very difficult for children to go on and achieve academic success. The 2014 National Curriculum in England makes no mention of different genres of writing, instead stating that children should learn to: &s;write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences&s;. Helping children to see themselves as writers, rather than &s;someone who does some writing when they are told to&s; is a crucial element in teaching writing. A strong model for the teaching of writing is built on the idea that once the first draft is complete the real work of writing can start. One of the best ways of learning to write is by studying how real authors use words and language to communicate.
