Abstract
This chapter distinguishes the historical experiences of Western and Eastern Europe, and reviews factors and events that helped shape contemporary Europe. Major topics include the development of democracy and capitalism in the West, the post-World War II rise of the welfare state, and Eastern Europe’s experience with communism and issues of post-communist transformation.
