Abstract
Railway transport integrates peripheral regions in the global economic marketplace, fosters the industrialization process, and strengthens intermodal transport. Standardization of tracks, a purpose‐built fleet, and the application of information technologies are keys for increasing the capacity of rail freight transport. The participation of rail in the freight transport market is being aligned with changes in the structure of freight shipments, in the international orientation of procurement and sales, and modal competition. Combined rail transport, high‐speed freight trains, and city logistics are innovations introduced by the railways for fully fledged freight transport services.
