Abstract

This paper is aimed at introducing a model for atmospheric correction and cirrus clouds removal from MSI images, based on the 6S model. Two images with cirrus occurrence were processed and visually compared with the image with no correction. Ground reflectance of three targets in one image was obtained from bands with cirrus removal and without the removal. Besides, a comparison was carried out with an OLI image collected four days apart and with no cirrus occurrence. The results show that the corrected bands were sharper than the non-corrected ones. Bands with cirrus removal had fewer differences to the OLI corresponding bands than the ones that had only atmospheric correction without cirrus removal. Corrected surface reflectance from the model yielded values which were more consistent for the analyzed targets. It is concluded that the presented model is suitable for atmospheric correction and cirrus removal from MSI of Sentinel 2A images.
