Abstract

Introduction: Benefits of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) in prevention of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) are proven. However, epidemiology and indication of ICD in real world remains largely unknown. Hypothesis: Real-world implantation of ICDs may differ from that ideal indication. Method: The patients who underwent ICD implantation were identified using the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service database between 2007 and 2015. Among the nonischemic causes, inherited arrhythmia as an indication of ICD implantation was estimated excluding all other cardiomyopathy and heart failure. Results: Total 4620 ICD implantation was performed during 9 years in Korea. ICD implantation for primary prevention was 1496 (32.4%) and 3124 (67.6%) was for secondary prevention. Implantation number and proportion of primary prevention were increased from 236 (primary prevention 7.2%) in 2007 to 1023 (primary prevention 43.1%) in 2015. Primary prevention was more frequently performed in old (≥40 years old) co...
