Abstract
96% of companies with employees of 300 or over have mandatory retirement system in the 2002 survey. The age of mandatory retirement varies, but the average age is 56, which is below the age of pension eligibility. Moreover, many of the companies in Korea tend to lay off or adjust their older workers with higher rates than mid-aged workers. The actual retirement age is even lower than the mandatory retirement age of each company. Furthermore, many workers seem to believe that the mandatory retirement system helps to maintain their employment longer. In the long run, mandatory retirement conflicts with the principle of outlawing age discrimination. However, it is difficult to illegalize the mandatory retirement in near future.
