Abstract

Since the development of the laser, and the awareness of its potential for ocular damage, eye protection has been a major safety concern. Engineering controls-limiting access to the beam-represent the first line of safety controls. However, it may not be possible to eliminate all chances of reflections, which would pose an eye hazard. In these cases, prudent practice dictates the use of personal eyewear such as protective spectacles or goggles. When eyewear is required, one of the most important aspects, in addition to the protection provided, is the comfort factor. If the eyewear is not comfortable, it will not be routinely used, regardless of how much protection it provides.
