The Role of Urban Planning in Sub‐Saharan Africa Urban Pollution Management

Recent evidence shows that urban pollution, in particular, both indoor and outdoor air pollution, in Sub-Saharan African (SSA) cities has been increasing, and air quality continues to deteriorate. This chapter seeks to contribute to an understanding as to how planning could be used to help manage urban pollution in SSA on the basis of a critique of the literature. It provides an overview of urban pollution in SSA and describes the ways in which planning could be leveraged to help address urban pollution. Urban planning is widely recognised as a tool that could be effectively deployed to help redress not only the pollution taking place in SSA urban environments, but all the environmental challenges that confront the world and promote sustainable development. The chapter concludes with some lessons for SSA urban planning in the context of the growing urban pollution in the region.
