by Georgia Brook Fuerst Chlorine is a commonly used wastewater disinfectant in the United States.Despite the effectiveness of chlorine as a disinfectant, a major disadvantage associated with it is the formation of hazardous disinfection byproducts (DBPs).Peracetic acid has been gaining much attention as an alternative to chlorine because it is not known to form hazardous DBPs associated with chlorine disinfection and it has potential cost savings. This bench-scale research took place at the Mill Creek Treatment Plant in Cincinnati, Ohio and investigates peracetic acid as an alternative to sodium hypochlorite. The results of this study show peracetic acid to be a comparable disinfectant against target organisms, E. coli and fecal coliforms.A pilot study has been initiated at the Little Miami Treatment Plant because of these results.
