The Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is the sea zone defined by the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea, over which a state has special rights over the exploration and use of marine resources, including energy production from water and wind. It stretches from the baseline out to 200 miles from its coast. The first part of the article analyses the basic terms related to this topic. Afterwards, the attention is paid to the origins and development of the EEZ. Summary of concept and characteristics of the EEZ is provided in the following part, while the rights and duties of the state(s) in the EEZ are described in the final part of the article.
