Abstract
One way of maintaining compatibility with existing usage of the term 'wetland' is to make a primary subdivision into aquatic wetlands and telmatic (alternatively 'paludic') wetlands, these representing the broad categories of shallow-water and wet terrestrial wetland, respectively. This paper is concerned exclusively with telmatic freshwater wetlands, and the term 'wetland' is used here as shorthand for this. The main terms used are outlined in Figure 5.1.
