Abstract

This invited blog for the British Academy examines Simon Schama's treatment of the paintings of Giovanni Bellini and Titian in the episode of BBC2's Civilisations series entitled 'Radiance'. Relating to the argument made in my 2013 monograph, Titian and the End of the Venetian Renaissance, it suggests that the relationship between the two Venetian artists was difficult, and that Titian radically departed from Bellini's approach to painting.
