Abstract

A railway line where all passengers travel to the same destination and all trains stop at each selected station (all-stop mode) is considered. A simple algebraic formulation that shows the relationship between the interstation spacing and the various cost and demand parameters is developed assuming that all stations are served by one feeder-mode operating on a rectangular street grid. When it is desired to space stations equally, it is shown that the optimum common spacing is closely related to the distance from the destination to the centroid of the demand distribution and to the average demand per unit length. The analysis is extended to include several feeder-modes.
