Abstract
Solar technology will give electric utilities a new challenge, one which calls for immediate response planning since so many regulatory initiatives will require a utility role. Solar technologies with near-term promise for six identified markets are examined. A checklist for commercialization identifies barriers to development that need to be crossed and indicates the level of product development, systems readiness, and marketing and distribution each has reached. The utility role is described in six steps involving energy delivery, economic effects on the service area, customer information packets, financing plans, diversification opportunities, and a clearinghouse for technological and regulatory information.
