Abstract
The site of production for the heterophile antibody in patients with infectious mononucleosis is unknown. Atypical lymphocytes from patients with infectious mononucleosis were grown in tissue culture in an attempt to demonstrate heterophile antibody production by these cells. In one instance, a significant rise in presumptive heterophile titer was demonstrated after incubation of the tissue culture. In two other instances, there was a significant rise in guinea pig absorbed (differential) heterophile titer. However, in six more experiments, no significant rise in heterophile titer could be demonstrated. Potential explanations for observations are discussed. (Author)
