Abstract

People use communication to convey everything in their mind. When conversation between two or more people happen they did not realize the existence of a pattern in conversation. The problem of this study is based on two question: What maxim are obeyed by the main character and what are the flouted maxim commited by the character of Baby. This study describes the rules in conversation used qualitative research method. Research data is available from the Baby Driver movie script (2017), as an example of a real conversation. The tehnique of collecting data used study documentation, the data that used by the writer is the text or the movie script. This study is supported by theory from Grice (1975). He makes a theory about the rules of communication like how a question should be asked and answered, which is called the Cooperative principle. Cooperative principle / conversational maxim is divided into 4 rules namely Maxim quantity, quality, relevant and manner. Sometimes in a real conversation, a person does not always use the rules of speech then he calls it as a violation or flouted the maxim. The step of analysis the data are: 1) catagorize the data 2) Classifiying the data 3) Giving explanation about the kind of obey or flout maxim. The conclusion, the writer found 37 data from the script which related to maxim and classified into 22 conversations or 59% that follow the rules of maxim and 15 conversations or 41% that violate the rules of maxim.
